Tonight's beer: Anderson Valley Winter Solstice

Anderson Valley Winter Solstice

Caramel and toast and dried/candied/dark-ish fruits (think cherries, figs, plums, maybe some apples and/or pears). Warm-ish dark baking spices—cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves—backed by grassy-floral bitterness. Strong presence, especially on the finish. Mostly sweet throughout.

Kinda thick, bready and syrupy, more sticky than chewy. Nicely carbonated. Aftertaste lasts a long time, gently drying but more filling and satisfying than clean or cleansing or refreshing. Softly warming in the belly, though it doesn't come across as at all boozy.

This may have been the first spiced winter beer I ever had, and it still has a soft spot in my heart. Plenty intense and complex, nicely integrated if kinda dominated by the spice and especially the vanilla (it's a good thing I really like vanilla). Delicious as hell. I'm very glad we bought the six-pack; the cans are a bonus.
