Tonight's beer: Flying Dog The Fear
Lots of dark toast to start, with some buttery-rich pumpkins (and maybe some roasty flecks of coffee and/or chocolate) braided in. Flickers of earthy-grassy bitterness reinforced by ample baking spices—nutmeg, ginger, allspice, cinnamon. Hints of maple and molasses. Complexly bittersweet from start to finish.
Medium-bodied, and well-carbonated. A little bready chewiness, some pretty substantial stickiness on the back end. Softly drying, but more in the realm of filling and satisfying than cleansing or refreshing. Maybe a vague glow, but not hot or anything, considering the 9% ABV.
Really, a delicious (if kinda idiosyncratic) pumpkin beer. Not roasty enough by any measure to be called a porter or a stout. Complex and intense, nicely balanced and integrated. Surprisingly drinkable. Impressive.
