Tonight's beer: Iron Fist Velvet Glove
The first thing I taste is dark fruit—practically burnt, but there: dried/candied cherries, plums, grapes; a slightly strange smear of bananas. Then, the dark chocolate arrives, with flecks and flickers of strong coffee, obliterating everything else momentarily. Earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness arises toward the finish. Maybe a wisp of smoke and/or ash, a strand of vanilla in the distance.
Thick, dense, mildly carbonated. Smooth. Lots of stickiness and chewiness. Gradually gently drying, coating and viscous and practically oily. Roughly no warning of the 9% ABV.
A delicious and dangerously drinkable big stout. Massive, but supple and subtle. Intense and complex as hell, impressively well-balanced and well-integrated. Reminds me more than a bit of Boulevard's Dark Truth: The fruitiness seems similarly Belgian-esque. I suspect I'm going to be seeking out more beers by these guys; I'm glad they had the sense of humor to come up with this beer's name.
