Tonight's beer: Southern Tier 2Xmas
Lots of odd spice to start: I swear it tastes like galangal at the beginning; there are nutmeg and ginger and probably juniper right behind. Caramel, toast, toffee, nuts fill in the gaps. Maybe some dark dried/candied fruits and traces of earth, grass, and flowers in the distance. Pretty dry by the end.
Bready and thick, nicely carbonated if a bit soft and chewy. Gently drying, maybe a vague boozy prickle. Substantial and filling, more satisfying than refreshing.
A delicious winter beer, a little on the brawny side, but impressively drinkable. Plenty of intense, complex flavor, probably too much spice to call it balanced but impressively well-integrated. The local beer store had it on tap at their growler-fill station; they'd sold out of it in bottles by the time we made it there. I'm glad even to get the one growler; this is very much yum.
