Southern Tier Pumking

Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Pumking

Southern Tier Pumking

Lots of rich caramel, tending toward buttery depths; toasty and nutty undertones. Earthy-grassy bitterness lurks in the background, with hints of baking spices; there's not balance here, exactly, but there's definitely counterpoint and something like poise.

Kinda creamy-thick, decently carbonated. Some bready chewiness and syrupy stickiness through the middle into the finish. A little drying, softly glowing with warmth. No prickle, though, considering the 8.6% ABV. Remarkably smooth.

Yum! A big and burly pumpkin beer, from hat I can tell brewed without much in the way of spices. Intense and complex as one could want from a beer like this, sweet enough to be a dessert beer—not balanced, exactly—but obviously what the brewers intended. Obviously not for everyone, but definitely for me.
