Tröegs Mad Elf

Tonight's beer: Tröegs Mad Elf

Tröegs Mad Elf

Surprisingly dry, for all the honey and sweet cherries splattering (tastefully) all over; some other dark fruits lurking underneath—plums, grapes, figs, etc.—with bananas, some dark toast, some cloves and allspice. There is some grassy-floral bitterness int he middle through the finish, but it's very much a background thing.

Impressively light-bodied for 11% ABV, and decently well-carbonated. Slowly drying, very refreshing. Some soft gradual warmth in the belly, but only the vaguest hint of a boozy prickly on the palate. A trace of lingering stickiness.

*That's* the stuff—if by "stuff" you mean a beer that's dominated by cherries, with a strong honey presence; clearly, that's exactly what I mean. A very big and intense beer, suitably complex and well-integrated; nothing like balanced, really, but still amazingly drinkable. The Mad Elf packs a big hammer, but is otherwise an entirely pleasant companion of an evening. Delicious.
