Weyerbacher Viridis Lupulus

Tonight's beer: Weyerbacher Viridis Lupulus

Weyerbacher Viridis Lupulus

A shockwave of bright citrus blasts across the palate: grapefruit, lemons, oranges, a touch of lime; pine, grass, flowers woven in; grace notes of musky tropical fruits—melons and pineapples and the like. Some caramel-pale bready and juicy sweetness managing something impressively close to balance, given the style of beer (and the 95 IBUs the brewery claims for the beer). Bitter, then sweet, then flinty-dry.

Medium-bodied, kinda bready, nicely carbonated. A little soft, a little creamy/smooth, but eventually scrubbing and cleansing; something like refreshing, after a long and resinous finish.

Well, *damn.* It's not the rocket-propelled thrill ride some big IPAs are, bit it's pretty intense for a 7.5% ABV beer that the brewer calls a Double IPA. Surprisingly complex and impressively well-integrated; off-balance, clearly intentionally (but less so than one might expect), but quite poised. Delicious from start to finish.
