Tonight's beer: Anderson Valley Winter Solstice
Lots of vanilla and toasty caramel, with baking spice looming right behind. Earthy-grassy bitterness appears off on the horizon. Possible impressions of candied/dried dark fruits. Starts pretty sweet, and doesn't get far from that—some threads of bitterness provide poise and counterpoint, nothing more.
Kinda thick and bready, gently carbonated. A bit chewy, definitely syrupy-sticky. Not particularly drying. Smooth and filling and satisfying.
One of my favorite Xmas beers, laden with spice and caramel and vanilla; basically a dessert beer (and a delicious one). Intense and complex and very nicely integrated; really, nothing like balanced. I think it's massively drinkable, but sweet beers don't bother me as much as they do some folks.
