Tonight's beer: Bavik Petrus Winter #9 Ale
Fruity-caramel sweetness as the opening salvo: figs, prunes, dates, maybe cherries. Some nuts, and some dark baking spices (cinnamon and allspice and cloves) lurking right behind. Threads of leather, tobacco, smoke scattered throughout, with flowers and grass off in the distance. A vague tart presence mostly around the finish and aftertaste, helping the beer dry out surprisingly well. Maybe a touch of brandy and rum.
Amazingly light-bodied, softly but amply carbonated. A little drying, with maybe a kiss of boozy warmth. Possibilities of stickiness through the finish, but mostly clean and almost cleansing; impressively refreshing.
An impressive Belgian Xmas beer, with just a touch of tart (like something Flemish, not some sort of Lambic) in the far background. Complex and integrated, quite intense but very well-balanced; amazingly drinkable, with very little hint of the 9% ABV. Probably another beer I'll need to start looking for come October, every year. Yum.
