Tonight's beer: Flying Dog Single Hop Simcoe Imperial IPA
Juicy-sappy pine spiked with citrus—grapefruit, some lemons and oranges; flowers and grass and musk threaded in. Distinct impressions of cat pee, pretty much typical of Simcoe hops, in my experience. Some gently-toasted bread, a touch of caramel in the background. Bitter from the start, transitioning to dry around the aftertaste.
Medium-bodied, kinda gently carbonated. Syrupy-sticky, drying, scrubbing and scouring. Practically no warning of the 10% ABV: just a dim and vague flickering glow.
One expects an Imperial IPA to be somewhat unbalanced, and this certainly lives up to that. Blisteringly intense and deeply complex; poised, more or less, and not at all sloppy—just a bit unhinged. Drinkable in the way that a slightly deranged Double IPA is. Delicious.
