Tonight's beer: Great Divide Hibernation Ale
Surprisingly roasty—chocolate and maybe coffee—backed by toast, nuts, and toffee; some bread and caramel threaded in. Earthy-grassy bitterness from the middle through the finish. Some flecks of dried/candied fruits, and a dash of vanilla and baking spice. Roasty, then a little sweet, then kinda bitter and dry.
Kinda thick and chewy, nicely carbonated, a little dense. Some syrupy stickiness into the aftertaste. Gently drying, eventually. Maybe a soft boozy glow, perfectly reasonable (and probably a bit on the discreet side) for 8.7% ABV.
A big and malty-rich Old Ale, rich and massively drinkable—an excellent choice for a chilly evening. Nicely intense and complex, very well-balanced and -integrated. Utterly delicious; supple and subtle and just a bit dangerous. I've been a big fan of Great Divide for a long time, and this beer does nothing to change that (and in fact is an example of why).
