Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Tonight's beer: Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Some caramel-toasty sweetness thickly slathered with (almost obliterated by) citrus-piney bitterness liberally flecked with flowers and grass. Come hints of dried/candied darkish fruits, a possibility of spice off in the distance. Dark spirits—mainly whiskey/bourbon—around the finish.

A little on th elight side of medium-bodied, with bright and lively carbonation. Surprisingly light on its feet (practically graceful) for 9.9% ABV, kinda supple and subtle. Some stickiness around the end, resinous-syrupy and a bit bready. Gentle warmth builds gradually in the belly.

I seem to be in the minority who prefer this beer to Sucks; that's fine, really, since Lagunitas has enough capacity to brew both. This is a marvelous interstitial beer that skitters among several categories. Intense and complex as heck, nicely balanced and gloriously well-integrated. Amazingly drinkable with very little warning of the boozy payload. A fine amount of warmth for a cold winter's night.
