Long Trail Hibernator

Tonight's beer: Long Trail Hibernator

Long Trail Hibernator

Deep toast and caramel, threaded with peat, earth, possibilities of smoke. Grass and something almost like tea sprinkled in as a mildly bitter counterpoint. A dollop of dried/candied fruit around the middle—mainly figs and prunes. Dries out gradually and incompletely, with maybe a dash of baking spices.

Bready, thick and chewy, with some stickiness into and through the finish. Softly warming and maybe a little drying. Pretty smooth and decently carbonated.

A nicely drinkable beer (maybe not the Scottish Ale I've seen it described as, but that's in the ballpark), an excellent choice for a winter seasonal. Moderately intense and complex—appropriate for the style—well-balanced and impressively integrated. Tasty. I keep stumbling onto good beers from Long Trail; I should probably buy more from them.
