Samuel Adams Winter Lager

Tonight's beer: Samuel Adams Winter Lager

Samuel Adams Winter Lager

Darkish toast, caramel, bread; contrapuntal bright spice—I'm pretty sure it's coriander, mostly—and earthy-grassy bitterness. Richly bittersweet from start to finish; wraps up gently dry.

Kinda bready and chewy, decently carbonated. Softly drying, shading to refreshing, with a trace of glowing warmth. Pretty clean and cleansing.

A nicely drinkable bockish lager, with some bright spicy grace notes. Moderately intense and complex, nicely integrated and well-balanced. Tasty, if maybe a bit subdued and straightforward. It's not a bad beer at all, and I'm pretty sure it's exactly what the brewers intended it to be; it's just not a great beer, either. Filler for the Winter Classics mix-12, IMO.
