Tonight's beer: Schmalz He'Brew/Cathedral Square St. Lenny's
Lots of bread, thickly flecked with spice and dried candied fruits (raisins, pears, apples, peaches); grassy-floral bitterness makes an ample counterpoint, with threads of pine and maybe citrus. Beautifully bittersweet from start to finish, evolving some to dryward.
Medium-bodied or so, maybe a little thick, a bit chewy and sticky. Nicely carbonated. A bit drying, impressively refreshing. Roughly zero alcohol presence, especially for 10% ABV: maybe a trace of warmth in the belly.
A delicious beer. Bittersweet Lenny's is a beer I've loved for a long while, and this is a pleasant variation on it—the Belgian yeast alters the character of the beer nicely. Complex and intense; marvelously integrated and well-balanced, stupidly drinkable. Supple and subtle and just a bit dangerous. Yum!
