Tonight's beer: 21st Amendment Lower De Boom

21st Amendment Lower De Boom

Caramel, toast, dark-ish bread balanced (or at least poised) against citrus, flowers, pine and grass. Background flickers of vanilla, spice, and butter; softly tannic threads sparsely and widely scattered. Evolves somewhat toward dry through and beyond the long lingering finish.

Thick, chewy and sticky; more bready than syrupy. Vaguely drying, some boozy heat and prickle entirely in keeping with 11.5% ABV. In the belly, filling and a bit warming.

A bit barleywine in a little can: It's a wonderful idea, very well-executed. Intense and complex as hell, nicely integrated and better-balanced than one might expect for a relatively fresh American barleywine. It's basically a sipping beer, but it's pretty drinkable for all-a-that. Definitely a bit boozy, but there's some grace and some subtlety, too. I'm curious to try some of the older cans (about a year old, now) I have stashed away.
