Tonight's beer: Left Hand Fade to Black Volume 5
Dark bread, toast, dark caramel tending toward maple and molasses; peppery threads, earthy-grassy bitterness. Hints of flowers and funk around the edges Chocolate and coffee emerge into a long aftertaste, as the beer musters toward dryness.
Surprisingly thick and smooth, with copious fine carbonation. Roasty-drying, startlingly clean and cleansing, with just a bit of chewiness and stickiness around the finish. Impressively refreshing.
A very nice beer, playing more in the farmhouse ale part of the sandbox, I think: The closest beer I can come with as a comparison is Stillwater's Existent. Intense and complex enough to hold and reward close attention; balanced and integrated, delicious and drinkable. Occasionally I find myself in a place where I can buy Left Hand (they don't have distro where I live), and it's practically always worth doing so. I'm looking forward to trying this with food—it seems as though it might have some of a saison's promiscuity that way.
