Tonight's beer: Samuel Adams Old Fezziwig
Lots of caramel-toasty sweetness, moderated and modulated by warm spice—mainly cinnamon and ginger—and hints of earthy-grassy bitterness. Orangey citrus flickers around the edges.
Medium-bodied, softly carbonated, some bready stickiness and chewiness. A little bit drying and refreshing. Pretty substantial and filling.
At this point, this beer is the biggest reason to buy the Winter Classics 12-pack: with the disappearance of the Holiday Porter and the candification of the (Cherry) Chocolate Bock, it's just about the only reason—though I do like the White Christmas well enough. This is a very nice beer, with lots of spice; it's pretty intense and complex, and all well-integrated and surprisingly well-balanced. Drinkable and delicious.I *do* wish I didn't have to buy a total of ten bottles of five beers I'm variously less interested in, just to get two bottles of this. Oh comma well.
