Tonight's beer: Allagash Midnight Brett
Roasty to start, probably more coffee than chocolate, backed by musky-funky-earthy Brett character. Bright fruit and dark bread in the background, with maybe a touch of peppery-sour rye. Grassy-earthy-floral bitterness emerges into the finish. Bitter and beautifully dry from start to the aftertaste.
Very light-bodied, extensively carbonated. Scrubbing, cleansing, drying—almost blistering. Impressively quenching and refreshing. Mostly clean: just a hint of stickiness.
Astonishingly drinkable and utterly delicious. I have tons of faith in Allagash and a known weakness for Bretty beers, so I had high hopes for this beer; my expectations have been exceeded. Intense and complex, well-integrated if definitely dominated by the yeast character. Practically screams to be paired with food, though it's a bit pricey for us to have bought more than the two. Worth the going, though. Masterfully done.
