Tonight's beer: Pipeworks Orange Truffle Abduction
Lots of chocolate, threaded with tart orangey citrus; dark bread, molasses, dark caramel in the background. Earth and grass lurking around the edges. Densely bittersweet from start to finish.
Thick and dense, bready-chewy and a bit syrupy-sticky. Lightly carbonated. Gradually drying. A dim flicker of boozy warmth, pretty restrained for 10.5% ABV.
A very drinkable big stout. Lots (and lots) of chocolate, with less of the orange zest mentioned on the label than I was expecting. Plenty intense and complex, surprisingly balanced and nicely integrated. I was expecting more orange, I think; considering how strongly up-front and present the chocolate is, that relative subtlety came as a bit of a surprise. Quite tasty, though. I don't get Pipeworks' beers very often, but the couple I've had have impressed.
