Tonight's beer: Tröegs La Grave
A densely-woven tapestry: pale fruits (apples, pears, bananas, peaches, apricots, white grapes); herbal-grassy bitterness (impressions of basil and parsley); hints of spice (allspice and cloves and ginger and galangal of all things); some pale bread touched with toast and caramel. Bittersweet from the start, and dries out thoroughly and abruptly.
Extraordinarily light-bodied, highly carbonated. Cleansing and refreshing and extensively drying. A little bready stickiness through the middle. Maybe a vague flicker of alcohol warmth.
A seriously tasty Tripel, just about spot-on for the style. Plenty intense and amazingly intense, wonderfully well-integrated and balanced. Delicious and staggeringly drinkable. Obviously a beer that would play *very* well with food. It's clear to me that Tröegs have figured out the bottle-conditioned thing. I am impressed.
