Tonight's beer: Tröegs Mad Elf

Tröegs Mad Elf

Lots of fruit: the cherries on the label are up front and obvious, and there are bananas, pears, apples, and white grapes present. Darkish baking spices—cloves and allspice, mainly—threaded with vanilla and maybe some rum. Maybe a little in the way of floral-grassy bitterness emerges around the end, as the beer struggles to dry out a little.

Impressively light-bodied, nicely carbonated. Very refreshing, leaning toward gently drying. Some syrupy stickiness through the finish. Scarily little alcohol presence.

One of the most alarmingly drinkable beers I've come across over the years. Intense and complex; nicely integrated if seriously dominated by the fruits, especially the cherries. Supple, subtle to the point of being almost creepy. A marvelous way to celebrate whatever holiday is on offer. Yum.
