Tonight's beer: Ommegang Biere d'Hougoumont
Caramel and vanilla up front, some earthy-grassy bitterness flecked densely in. Solid toasty-pale-bready foundation. Herbs and flowers in the background, and some dried/candied fruits off in the far distance. Starts tilted toward sweet, but evolves through bittersweet to pleasantly dry.
Bready-chewy, decently carbonated. Some soft stickiness, gently drying and refreshing by the finish. A bit coating. Eventually a little cleansing.
Very nice, as I've come to expect from Ommegang, even if this French style is arguably a bit out of their Belgian bailiwick. Rich and complex and impressively intense, nicely balanced and integrated and drinkable; a delicious beer. Wood-aged character present, but not dominant. Obviously a beer that would pair nicely with food—this style is great for poultry, and I bet this beer would neatly fall in line, there.
