Tonight's beer: Boulevard Grainstorm
Dark bread, some toast and a little caramel, smeared heavily with chocolate and coffee, wrapped in citrussy-piny-floral hops. Hints of grass, earth, maybe peat/smoke emerge around the finish. A flash of dark sweetness to start, then massively and complexly bitter evolving to mostly dry.
Maybe a little thicker than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated; mostly soft, a little chewy and sticky—bready and syrupy and resinous. Immensely drying, eventually scrubbing and scouring, cleansing, refrshing.
Egad! Boulevard aren't the first to brew in this style, but Grainstorm is probably my favorite in a style I like tons. Overwhelmingly intense and complex, impressively well-balanced and integrated. Drinkable as hell, and would probably pair nicely well with steak (grilled or pan-seared), or maybe a pot roast. I don't make a habit of recommending beers, here; that said: buy this beer, then drink this beer.
