Tonight's beer: Santa Fe State Pen Porter
Chocolate steps forward, riding dark bread and caramel hard; distinctly porter-ish tang lurking (maybe connected to history of stale beers threaded into porters?) Earthy-grassy bitterness backing up the gentle roast; impressions of peat and smoke around the fringes. Starts richly bittersweet, trends gradually to dry.
A little thicker than medium-bodied, nicely if gently carbonated. A bit of bready-syrupy stickiness, mainly around and after the finish. Some roasty-dry character, but overall refreshing.
A seriously delicious beer, a wonderful example of an American robust porter. Plenty intense and notably complex; gloriously well-balanced. Smooth and immensely drinkable and clearly exactly what the brewers intended. Obviously I need to hie myself to the Southwest, at least for a bit; between the beer and the geology, that would be fun.
