Tonight's beer: 21st Amendment Lower De Boom
Grassy-citrussy-piny-floral bitterness on top, some bread and caramel and toast behind. Background impressions of nuts and toffee, molasses, dried candied fruits (figs and plums and maybe cherries or grapes). Dim hints of baking spices like cloves or ginger or cinnamon.
Thick and a bit dense, a little sparsely carbonated. Chewy and sticky, somehow flinty and prickly at the same time. Distinctly warming but not unpleasant or at all untoward for 11.5% ABV.
A tasty (if still very young) barleywine; powerful stuff, both in terms of flavor and alcohol content. Intense and complex, definitely; more poised than balanced, and decently well-integrated. Probably needs more time to come together; it seems as though it's likely to. It's nice to see a beer this big in smaller cans, so my liver doesn't feel as though it's being punished for something.
