Tonight's beer: Deschutes Black Butte XXIII

Deschutes Black Butte XXIII

Chocolate, caramel, vanilla; dark bread and toast back a step or two. Earthy-grassy bitterness, touches of peat, smoke, bright citrus and burnt darker fruits. Wet cardboard around the edges, maybe. Densely bittersweet from beginning to end.

Medium-bodied, briskly carbonated. Some chewiness and a bit of stickiness; just a trace of boozy prickle—nothing at all untoward for 10.8% ABV. Eventually drying and warming in the belly.

Yum! A very big beer that's held up well for ~3 years and might have like another year in it—I think there's some oxidation happening here, which generally means the end is nigh. Still, intense and complex, well-integrated and something like balanced (though that latter concept may not be in the plan here); delicious and drinkable as hell in a crazy-big-sip-the-night-away-beer way.
