Tonight's beer: Yards George Washington's Tavern Porter
Lots of darkish sweetness, at least at first: dark bread, molasses/brown sugar, caramel, toast; chocolate lurking on the periphery. Bitterness emerges from the chocolate, transitioning to earth and grass with hints of peat and smoke and tobacco. Shifts some toward dry, but never quite gets there.
A bit thicker than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated, kinda sort and chewy and bready/syrupy sticky. Smooth, and eventually surprisingly refreshing.
AN impressive porter, possibly closer to older English (or very early American) versions than it is to the modern porter categories—depends on hoe literally one wants to take the brewer's claim about the recipe's age. Darkly sweetly drinkable, with plenty of bitterness for poise if not balance. I need to try other beers from these people.
