Southern Tier Compass

Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Compass

Southern Tier Compass

Lots of bright citrus: orange and grapefruit and lemon. Flowers and grass and hints of pine; dim impressions of bright spice (like, say, coriander). Pale bread, with grace notes of toast and caramel, in the background; flickers of dried/candied pale fruits (pears and apples, mostly) around the periphery. Bitter, then dives almost directly to dry, barely passing through sweet along the way.

Light-bodied, well-carbonated. A trace of stickiness—resinous and syrupy—around the edges. Almost-pulpy juiciness. Cleansing, drying, immensely refreshing. Practically zero hint of the 9% ABV.

Yum! A biggish pale ale that practically plays like a mimosa—not hoppy enough to be any sort of IPA, tart and juicy and massively drinkable. Intense and complex as hell, nicely integrated if only in the vicinity of balanced. Another wonderful beer from Southern Tier.
