Tonight's beer: Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Imperial Stout (2013)
Vanilla and butter—that lovable bourbon character—on top of chocolate, dark bread, caramel. Threads of ash and smoke through the middle, and some earthy bitterness; peat and burnt fruit in the background. Dim hints of something like spice around the finish. Richly bittersweet from beginning to end.
Kinda thick and dense, carbonation decent but a little sparse; syrupy-sticky and a little chewy. A bit slippery and slick. Some notable boozy heat and prickle that fates a bit as the beer warms. Vaguely drying on the finish, but not on the same planet as "refreshing" (appropriately so, I think). Filling and warming.
O, wow! As a certified Boulevard Fan Boy, I had unreasonably high expectations for this beer; it exceeded them bu a ton. Staggeringly intense and complex as hell, holds together incredibly well but "balanced" is not particularly applicable here—probably by design. Still a bit hot and I think young; I wish we'd picked up another to age another year or more. Lesson learned, I guess.
