Tonight's beer: North Coast Class of '88 Barleywine
Caramel, bread, pale dried fruits; threads of vanilla and baking spice. Pine and citrus, grass and flowers and earth making for a powerful counterpoint. Sweet, then an immediate turn toward bitter, followed by a long sojourn in a very dry place. (Not quite forty years in the desert, but maybe close ...)
Thick and bready-chewy, kinda soft, carbonation maybe a little on the light side but adequate. Gradually softly drying. Alcohol present, but distinctly subdued for 10%; the beer is still too utterly massive to be in the same universe as refreshing.
Yummy! A bit and powerful barleywine, surprisingly supple and graceful. Massively intense and complex, entirely integrated and impressively well-balanced (the last two possibly improved by about a year in the bottle). Definitely a big sipping beer, but drinkable as hell for all-a-that. Delicious from start to finish.
