Sierra Nevada Flipside

Tonight's beer: Sierra Nevada Flipside

Sierra Nevada Flipside

Lemony citrus, hints of pepper and grapefruit; pine, flowers, grass around the edges. Caramel-toast and bread in the interstices. Bitter to start, transitions briskly through sweet to starkly dry. Vague inchoate flickers of baking spices and dried fruits.

Medium-bodied or maybe a little lighter; nicely carbonated. A little bready chewiness, scads of piny-resinous-syrupy stickiness. Eventually wraps up drying and scrubbing to the point of scouring.

A very nice amber/red ale (or Red IPA, if you want to go with what Sierra Nevada call it). Tons of hops character—almost over-the-top intensity and complexity—but only balanced by the relatively loose standards of American IPAs. Drinkable enough that it vanished before I finished my notes; that doesn't happen often.
