Tonight's beer: Weyerbacher Eighteen
Chocolate, toast, bananas and cloves; some dried fruits woven into the tapestry—cherries and pears and apples, hints of plums and white grapes. traces of cinnamon and allspice. Flashes and flickers of brandy and rum. Dim impressions of grass and flowers, as the beer struggles mightily but futilely to dry out.
About medium-bodied, lightly-carbonated; surprisingly dense. Not particularly chewy, but tons and tons of syrupy stickiness. Distinctly but not unpleasantly boozy—the 11.1% ABV is obvious but carried with suppleness and grace. Eventually, some gentle warmth in the belly.
A bit and overwhelmingly strong weizenbock, a bit over the top but well within norms for American versions of the style (the good German ones are on an entirely other planet). Intense as hell, with fewer notes but really really loud; a little on the sloppy side, but fun if you like the style (and I do). Big enough that it's a mandatory sipping beer, but drinkable enough for all-a-that.
