Tonight's beer: Anchor Big Leaf Maple
Starts out startlingly bitter: pine, citrus, musk, flowers, grass; bready-toasty caramel right behind, with vague threads of nuts, toffee, maple, and dried fruits. After that momentary flash of sweetness, the beer dries out hard and quickly.
Medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. Scrubbing, drying, refreshing. A soft tough of resinous-syrupy stickiness around the very finish.
A delicious and frighteningly drinkable American amber ale, with the maple syrup presence subtle and well fitted in with the rest of the beer. Impressively intense and complex—especially at 6% ABV—and nicely balanced. A wonderful beer to drink while (at least at little grudgingly) welcoming autumn.
