Left Hand Smoke Jumper

Tonight's beer: Left Hand Smoke Jumper

Left Hand Smoke Jumper

Deeply smoky, almost meaty (hello, bacon!). Dark bready-toasty sweetness edged with caramel, molasses, hints of maple syrup. Ash and burnt fruits, touches of peat. Earthy-grassy bitterness present throughout, sliding forward around the finish as the beer dries out a bit. Flickers of vanilla as the beer warms.

Thick, dense, chewy, sticky; decently carbonated. Not much hint of the 8.8% ABV. Eventually cleansing and gently drying, almost refreshing. A dim, soft glow in the belly.

A delicious big smoked porter: richly intense and complex, nicely integrated if kinda dominated by the smoke. I suspect that last is just about what the brewers had in mind; in fact, the whole beer seems to have come off exactly as intended. Obviously a beer that would play well with the right foods—grilled/smoked, yes, but also dark meats, sausages, and probably desserts. Very very nice.
