Tonight's beer: Oskar Blues Old Chub
Smokey-caramel-bready-toasty sweetness, with some peat threaded in; earthy bitterness in the background. Distant impressions of spice, toffee, dried fruits. Eventually dries out surprisingly quickly and thoroughly.
A little thick, with some bready chewiness and stickiness. Gently drying, startlingly close to refreshing. Roughly zero warning of the 8% ABV. Eventually ends up almost clean.
A very drinkable biggish Wee Heavy, a little smoky but well contained and integrated—this isn't a Schlenkerla Rauchbier or anything like that. Intense as hell and nicely complex, impressively balanced given the malt-bomb tendencies of the style. A beautiful beer as the last desperate gasps of summer fade to autumn.
