Tonight's beer: Rogue New Crustacean
Citrus and pine backed by grass and flowers; all that poised against bready-caramel-toasty sweetness. Threads of toffee, nuts, spice , dried fruits (pale like pears and apples). Sweetness augmented by pretty substantial booze. Eventually, gradually, the beer does dry out at least a little.
Thick, syrupy, viscous; immensely sticky. Plenty of alcoholic heat, but nothing unpleasant. Scrubbing, scouring, almost abrasive; drying like being stranded in the Sahara.
Rogue sez this beer is intentionally on the stylistic border between Barleywine and Double IPA, and it is—though I think it lands more on the Barleywine side of the line. Almost numbingly intense, and very complex; I don't know if "balanced" necessarily applies, but this is definitely poised and surprisingly drinkable in a big sipping beer kinda way. Tasty, though it could definitely age at least a year.
