Southern Tier Warlock

Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Warlock

Southern Tier Warlock

Dark toast, caramel, molasses; layered sheets of pumpkin and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger), chocolate and coffee. Maple, smoke, grass and ash lurk around the fringes. Dim flickers of whiskey and maybe rum. Darkly bittersweet from the start, dries out gradually but pretty completely by the end.

Thicker than medium-bodied, more bready than syrupy but still some stickiness lingers. Decently carbonated, a bit refreshing, just a touch of boozy warmth. Some cleansing/scrubbing, more than a little smooth; drying into the finish.

That's the stuff. A big dark pumpkin bread of a beer, and one of the best pumpkin stouts I've had. Definitely the dark caramel notes I love in Pumpking, but stouty enough to satisfy in that regard as well. Intense as hell and crazily complex, balanced and nicely-integrated and stupidly drinkable without much warning of the biggish boozy payload. I know I'm in the tank for Southern Tier, but I really really like this beer.
