Stone (Stochasticity Project) Quadrotritacale

Dark bread, caramel, hints of nuts and toffee and chocolate. Dark dried.candied fruits (cherries, plums, grapes, maybe figs) lurk around the middle; grassy-floral bitterness emerges toward the finish as the beer dries out. Flickers of baking spice, smoke, tobacco around the edges, and dim hints of dark spirits (brandy, rum).

Maybe a bit on the light side of medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. Drying and refreshing, if a little bready-chewy-sticky to qualify as either clean or cleansing. Alarmingly little warning of the 9.3% ABV.

Impressive. Nice to see Stone put aside their usual arrogant bullshit and brew a beer that manages to be superb without striving and struggling to be a badass. Intense and complex as hell—as one might expect for a big quadrupel—but balanced, graceful, subtle, nicely integrated. A delicious—and remarkably humble, going by the label text—take on the style.
