Tonight's beer: Left Hand Black Jack
Lots of dark roasty-toasty flavors on top: chocolate and coffee; dark bread and caramel and toast. Earthy-grassy bitterness emerges around the middle, with threads of smoke and peat, and a hint of tang. Alternates between bitter and sweet, then wraps up gently dry.
Medium-bodied, well-carbonated. A little chewy and a little sticky, but finishes mostly clean and almost refreshing. Impressively smooth. Gently drying.
A very drinkable porter, clearly intentional in its overall English character. Balanced and integrated; subtly complex and probably too gentle to really call intense. An impressive beer, and a great way to settle back in at home. I'm glad Left Hand started distro around here a while ago; I haven't had a bad beer from them.
