Monday Night Drafty Kilt

Tonight's beer: Monday Night Drafty Kilt

Monday Night Drafty Kilt

Dark bread and caramel poised against toast and ash and smoke; earthy-grassy bitterness firm in the background. Hints of dried/candied dark fruits—cherries, plums, figs; flickers of hits and toffee. Starts a bit sweet, slides gradually toward dry.

A little thicker than medium-bodied, with light-ish but adequate carbonation. Some bready chewiness, a trace of syrupy stickiness. Mildly drying, a bit refreshing. Filling and very satisfying.

Way back in the distant past, Scotch Ales were one of the first styles I fell in love with; this is a good example, with a hint of actual smoke (something not always present) and just a bit more hoppy bitterness than most actual Scottish Wee Heavies (but not so much as to take the beer to an entirely different style, like barleywine—Founders Dirty Bastard comes to mind here). Intense and complex, supple and subtle, nicely balanced. Impressively drinkable. A nice first beer to have from this brewery; they say on the label this beer was brewed to go with food, and I believe them. Very nice.
