Tonight's beer: Samuel Adams Double Black
Lots of dark sweetness: molasses, dark bread, caramel, toffee, toast. Dark roasty bitterness a countermelody, notes of chocolate and coffee. Earthy-grassy bitterness danced with traces of smoke and ash and maybe peat, around the perimeter. Dries out gradually but thoroughly.
Medium-bodied, decently carbonated. A little chewy and a bit sticky. Softly drying and surprisingly refreshing; wraps up cleansing and scrubbing.
An impressive schwarzbier, if a big one, from a brewery that at least used to brew an excellent one at a more conventional strength. Intense and quite complex, marvelously well-balanced; less purely linear than most paler lagers but still pretty straightforward. Drinkable as hell. I am always happy to see the Samuel Adams folks try new things; this is delicious.
