Tonight's beer: Stone 18
Opens with a sharp crack of piny bitterness, with threads of grapefruit and lime; flowers and grass and maybe perfume and musk lurk around the periphery. Some bready sweetness, hints of caramel, toast, toffee. Possibilities of chocolate, briefly. Bitter, then a moment of sweet, then blisteringly dry.
Medium-bodied or a little thicker, carbonation a little on the light side but adequate. Some resinous-syrupy stickiness, but overall cleansing and scrubbing, drying and refreshing. Alcohol a very subdued presence.
A nice Double IPA, with enough of a hint of the darker malts to make for a pleasant change of pace. Lots of hops character—makes me curious about El Dorado hops, more broadly; this is almost a single-hop beer. Lots of complex bitterness, not much sweetness to balance; nicely integrated but more poised than balanced. Supple and surprisingly graceful, impressively drinkable.
