Tonight's beer: Terrapin Midnight Monk
Floral-grassy bitterness smeared over dark chocolate and toasted dark bread. Grace notes of grapefruit and pine butted against coffee, smoke and ash. Background threads of musk and spice. Richly bittersweet from the start, evolves smoothly to startlingly dry.
On the light side of medium-bodied, highly-carbonated. A little resijnous stickiness, mostly around the finish, but overall impressively clean; scrubbing and drying and bracingly refreshing.
Very, *very* nice. Basically, your standard Black IPA, with subtle yeast character by way of Belgium. Dark roasty-toasty malts braced against potent h ops; complex and intense, balanced and unified and integrated. Drinkable as hell, with practically no hint of the 9.8% ABV, Supple and subtle and graceful. For some reason I tent to drab Terrapin's beers when I'm in Georgia, even though they have distribution around here. I should probably see about changing that behavioral pattern, because Terrapin make some awesome beers.
