Tonight's beer: Anchor Our Special Ale (2014)
Dark bready sweetness, toast, caramel. Citrus and bright spice—nutmeg and ginger and maybe more—mingled with floral-grassy bitterness. Some earthiness in the distance, and possibilities of nuts/toffee. Wraps up perkily dry.
Light-bodied, with lots of sprightly carbonation. Some bready softness and stickiness, gently drying. For a beer as dark and as spicy as this, surprisingly refreshing.
This year's version of this is a little more of a shift from last year's recipe than has been the case for at least a few years, if memory serves. More citrus than I remember, certainly. Intense and complex, given the 5.5% ABV, impressively well-balanced and superbly integrated. Remarkably drinkable. Anchor manages to hit these beers out of the park, year after year. Delicious.
