Tonight's beer: Boulevard (Smokestack Series)/Ommegang Collaboration 4 Saison
Floral-grassy bitterness opens, densely woven with bright spice. Pale-bready sweetness fills in right behins, with grace notes of toast and caramel and candied pale fruits (apples, pears, white grapes). earth, pine, maybe citrus flicker in the distance. Finishes snappy and dry.
Very light-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Drying and powerfully refreshing, clean and cleansing and scrubbing. Just a little softness through the middle.
So, Boulevard and Ommegang—two of the best brewers in the US, and two brewers that have individually demonstrated some mastery of the style—have collaborated on an awesome saison. (The fact I'm a huge fanboy of both breweries is an entirely unrelated fact.) I'm shocked. Stunningly drinkable, amazingly complex and intense, wonderfully well-balanced. I suspect I'm going to end up regretting only buying the one bottle of this; for one thing, it would obviously go marvelously with food.
