Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Tonight's beer: Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Darkly sweet to start: lots of caramel and toast, some bready grace notes, molasses scattered throughout. Grassy-floral-piny bitterness emerges into the middle and lingers through the finish; some flickers of grapefruity citrus dance along the perimeter. Momentarily sweet to start; evolves through bittersweet to finish bitter and dry.

Astonishingly light-bodied for a beer that shades as much as this one does toward being a barleywine; nicely carbonated. A little bit of resinous-syrupy stickiness into the aftertaste. Drying, alarmingly refreshing, with zero hint of the 9.9% ABV.

Oh, yum! This is a beautiful beer; scarily drinkable, completely delicious. Intense as hell and crazily complex, smooth and balanced and graceful and entirely its own thing. One of my favorite beers on the planet, seriously; the year Lagunitas didn't brew this was a sad, sad year.
