Tonight's beer: Left Hand Black Jack Porter
Dark bread, big clouds of smoke alongside caramel and toast and chocolate. Toffee lurking around the edges. Earthy-grassy bitterness emerges toward the finish, with hints of peat and dried fruits. Darkly smoke-sweet, then darkly bitter, then darkly dry.
Maybe a little thicker than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. A bit soft and chewy, some syrupy-stickiness lingering. Gently drying, startlingly refreshing.
A wondrously darkling beer, one of the better non-imperial porters I've had. Tons of flavor—all the intensity and complexity one could ask for—and it holds together superbly well, marvelously well-balanced; poised and graceful. Clearly a beer that would love to dance with food in the pale moonlight (but is content to darkle and bide its time). Impressively drinkable. Very, very nice.
