Samuel Adams Helles Bock

Tonight's Samuel Adams Helles Bock

Samuel Adams Helles Bock

Lots of bready sweetness, heavily smeared with dark caramel and edged with toast and toffee. Grassy-floral bitterness arises around the middle, with flickers of pine around the edges. Dries out gently but pretty completely.

Kinda thick, soft, bready-chewy. Hints of syrupy stickiness. Wraps up pretty clean, and impressively refreshing for a 7% ABV beer. Smooth, especially on the finish.

A very tasty Helles Bock, nicely representative of the style (and quite distinct from Imperial Pilsners, both in general and in the specific case of the one in the Exploring Lagers box). Intense, more straightforward than complex; nicely balanced and holds together superbly well. Impressively drinkable. Bocks can tend toward being malt-bombs, but this isn't cloying at all.
