Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Tier de Garde
Pithy grapefruit front and center, with other citrus—mostly lime and oranges—woven densely in; piny-grassy-floral notes flickering in the bitter cloud. A touch of pale-bready sweetness in the backgronud, with vague hints of baking spice and candied fruits. Transitions directly from very bitter to very dry; does not pass Go, does not collect two hundred dollars.
Light-bodied and well-carbonated, some syrupy stickiness but mostly clean. Cleansing and scouring, drying and refreshing. Maybe a bit of boozy prickle, but overall very little alcohol presence.
Yum! Grapefruity as hell, but there's plenty else going on, and the beer is nothing like one-dimensional. Intense, yes, but complex and surprisingly well-balanced; marvelously intevrated. Spookily drinkable. Southern Tier persist in rocking the hell out of just about every beer I have from them.
